Southern Maryland Pond Fishing for Largemouth

I've been putting in so much time lately rigging boats to get ready for the season it was nice to take a day and get out on the water. The weather forecast was calling for the first 80 degree day of 2021 but the winds were forecast to be just as strong as the sun. Instead of fighting the wind it was a great day to find some sheltered water and search for some pre-spawn largemouth.

I've been a member of the Mattawoman Rod & Gun Club for well over 30 years and it was the perfect solution for today's fishing adventure.

The typical spring pattern and baits worked well today - Rapala minnows around submerged wood along with yellow and chartreuse spinner baits.

Water temperatures ramped up quickly in the shallow water hovering right around 70 degrees.

Total fish count for the day was 10 largemouth - most were dinks but one came in around 12 inches and I had a swipe from a big white belly.

This time of the year you have to get through the spunky little males showing off for those pre-spawn females to score the quality fish.
